Perifery at IBC: Cloud, AI, and Innovation

With IBC 2024 just around the corner, Leanne Tomlin, Marketing Director at Perifery, hosted a pre-show webinar to discuss some of this year’s core themes, industry trends, and what visitors can expect at the Perifery booth. Leanne was joined on the webinar by Senior Sales Director, Peter Watling, and Solutions Architect, George Maddocks.

A launchpad for emerging technologies

As Europe’s largest media expo, IBC has long been recognized as a launchpad for innovative technologies in the media and entertainment industries, and this year promises to be no different.

Leanne started the conversation by asking about the significance of IBC. Pete pointed out the impact that the show has on the industry in providing a platform for companies to showcase emerging technologies. He highlighted that while Perifery is a fairly new company, the technology that it is built from is well-established across the sector. He shared that there is a lot of innovation going on behind the scenes at the company and gave some teasers to what will be announced in the lead up to the event - teasers hint at exciting advancements in AI and added functionalities that are poised to enhance media workflows. Keep your eyes peeled for those!

Emphasizing how IBC provides the ideal platform for deep conversations to happen, George said, “There’s really no substitute for face-to-face when it comes to driving change.”

Core theme: Cloud technology

With cloud technology a central theme at IBC, Leanne asked the panelists to share how cloud storage can help resolve operational challenges.

Pete discussed how cloud technology has become essential for the industry, with every organization using or planning use it in some form. He emphasized that while public cloud solutions often come to mind first, there are numerous alternatives available that are built on innovation and tailored specifically for media workflows.

Noting some of the challenges faced within the industry, Pete highlighted how Perifery’s cloud offering, OM Cloud, has had its pricing streamlined and functionalities enhanced. He said, “[OM Cloud] is a media-focused cloud platform with a commercial model that's designed to be used by media companies.”

George added that cloud is now a well-established concept within the M&E industry, offering scalability, remote access, and peace of mind to users.

Core theme: AI

Shifting the focus to AI, another central theme at IBC – and in the world in general-,  Leanne asked how AI can enhance collaboration and content delivery in media workflows.

George pointed out that while AI is spoken about almost everywhere, it is still in its infancy. He highlighted the importance of focusing on practical examples where AI can make a real difference. He noted how Perifery’s AI is “configured around the notion of workflow automation and driving efficiencies”. By automating time-consuming tasks like file management, image detection, and transcoding, Perifery’s AI solutions improve accuracy and reduce the need for human intervention.

Pete added, “We're not an AI company, we're a storage company with applications to give you a better experience to protect that archive content and to do a lot more with it.” Hinting at some exciting developments (to be announced prior to IBC), Pete encouraged viewers to visit the Perifery booth at the show to explore Perifery’s AI functions in person.

Perifery’s storage solutions go beyond mere data storage. Pete emphasizes that their customers can do more than just store data—they can generate revenue from their archive content. With no egress or hidden costs, Perifery’s cloud platform offers transparency and value, making it a cost-effective solution for media companies.

Perifery’s IBC showcase

While Perifery is, at its core, a storage provider, it is all about providing benefits that go beyond storage. With huge metadata storage capabilities, Perifery enables media organizations to understand and take action on their content. Their integrations with non-linear editing and other tools further streamline media workflows.

With new branding and exciting teasers set to be revealed prior to IBC, Perifery is ready to stand out at this year’s show. Visit Perifery on booth 7.D18 and see how we can help you do more with less.
